Bright White Hair And A Close Gaze Against Soft Shadow
His white hair catches my eye before the glasses bring me closer to his face. I photographed this elderly man in India in black and white, leaving the setting softly out of focus around him. The loose strands, pale beard, and deep lines across his forehead give the portrait detail without needing an elaborate background.
The glasses sit at a slight angle, with small reflections along the lenses and frame. His eyes remain visible behind them, directed toward the camera. I like how that direct connection holds its place within the finer textures: the hair and beard draw attention, but the face remains the reason for the photograph.
A length of cloth hangs around his neck over an open shirt. Its folds lead down from his shoulders, creating broader lines beneath the smaller marks of the face. The horizontal composition leaves space to his right, where the background becomes a soft arrangement of grey and darker shadow. That space allows his outline to stay clear.
I do not need to attach a life story to the portrait for it to hold my attention. The image gives me a particular face, a slight tilt of the head, and a meeting with the camera. Black and white brings those visible qualities together, from the bright hair at the top of the frame to the quiet folds below. It is their combination that keeps me returning to the photograph.
