Orange Lettering Across A Weathered Green Wooden Facade

The orange word CHILE stands out against faded green boards at Whalers Bay in Antarctica. I made this colour photograph in 2010, looking directly at the front of the abandoned wooden building. Its doorway, worn paint, and broken steps create a compact architectural study within a sparse, pale landscape.

What holds my eye first is the pairing of colour and texture. The lettering remains bold, but the boards beneath it are streaked and uneven. On the opposite side of the doorway, other painted marks have become less clear as the surface wears away. I like how that difference allows one word to emerge while the rest of the facade stays visually unsettled.

The open door gives the composition a strong dark centre. Through the building, a second opening reveals a little of the landscape beyond, making a small passage of light within the shadows. Below, a narrow set of steps and loose boards extend toward the foreground. Their irregular angles break up the straight divisions of the wall.

I kept the surrounding ground and damaged side wall in the frame because they explain the building’s condition more clearly than a tight crop of the lettering would. There is no need to invent a story for every mark. The visible contrast of orange, green, grey wood, and dark soil already gives the photograph character. It offers an unusual focal point for a space that welcomes weathered architecture, understated colour, and images from remote places.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
