White Mountains Weathered Trees on Pale Slope Colour Landscape Photography
Bare Trunks Mark A Steep Diagonal Of Loose Stone
A steep pale slope cuts diagonally across this White Mountains photograph, with weathered tree remnants spaced along it. The exposed wood is warmer in colour than the loose stone, making the individual forms easy to distinguish. I photographed this California hillside in 2009, bringing a small group of rugged shapes into a deliberately open landscape view.
Two taller trunks stand near the middle, each with a broken upper outline and a different set of remaining branches. One rises almost straight, while the other spreads sideways before reaching upward. Fallen wood lies farther left, following the incline in longer, lower shapes. I find the spacing between these forms particularly interesting. They do not make a continuous woodland; each has enough pale ground around it to show its own character.
Small stones cover nearly the entire hillside, creating an even texture that contrasts with the more pronounced grooves of the wood. The slope rises toward the upper right, and a soft grey blue sky fills the opposite side. There are few competing details, so the main diagonal gives the photograph much of its structure. My interest is in how a sparse landscape can remain visually rich through shape and surface alone. The restrained colour allows the trees to stand out gently rather than through a dramatic palette. As a print, the scene offers space, texture and an unusual view of California’s mountain terrain.
