Weathered Havana Church Archway Black and White Wall Art
Rough Plaster and a Narrow Opening Into Brighter Light
A narrow arch opens through a thick, textured wall inside this Havana church. I framed the passage closely, letting rough plaster occupy much of the black and white photograph while a brighter wall and small window remain visible beyond it. The scene is quiet, but the surfaces give the eye plenty to explore.
Light falls unevenly across the nearer wall, revealing scratches, mottled patches, and small changes in the plaster. Those marks follow no regular pattern, yet the arch gives them a clear structure. Its rounded top and upright sides hold the composition together, separating the close surface from the space behind it. I like the way that simple opening makes the wall’s depth visible.
Through the arch, the window introduces a smaller rectangle within the larger curve. The wall beside it is paler, and the floor recedes around the corner, suggesting a continuation of the interior beyond what the photograph shows. At the threshold, worn edges and darker tiles bring attention back toward the foreground. I chose monochrome to keep those relationships in light and texture clear. The different greys allow the rough wall, smooth-looking patches, and deep shadows to remain distinct without competing colour. What I wanted to preserve was this particular passage inside the Cuban church: a strong architectural shape whose character comes from the irregular surfaces around it and the small amount of brighter space it reveals.
