Bright Painted Layers Stretch Through an Abandoned Building Interior
Bright paint covers the floor, ceiling, and walls inside this abandoned building at VW Slug Bug Ranch. I photographed the interior in color, following the long space past open windows and a painted phone enclosure. Pink, turquoise, yellow, and green overlap across almost every visible surface, while the building’s repeated openings keep the view organized beneath the crowded marks.
The near corner holds some of the strongest color. A narrow structure beside the window is painted pink and green, with a yellow heart above it. Beyond that, window frames recede along the wall and reveal more painted surfaces inside. I like how those straight architectural edges give the eye a path through a scene that might otherwise feel completely scattered.
The ceiling and floor extend the pattern into the depth of the photograph. Large curves, small letters, and broad patches of paint sit beside one another, with older colors showing through wherever the layers remain visible. The light brings out the closest surfaces, while darker spaces between the openings create pauses within the color. The vertical frame makes both the overhead marks and the painted ground part of the same view.
What interests me is the way a recognizable interior has been changed by so many separate additions. Its basic structure still directs the composition, but its surfaces no longer follow a single design. Someone drawn to street art or unusual roadside places may enjoy examining those competing layers. I keep finding small shapes within the larger pattern, then stepping back to see how the building holds them together.
