An Oversized Arrow Tilting Across the Arizona Sky
An oversized metal arrow leans across the sky near Flagstaff, Arizona, its lower point set close to the ground and its broad upper fins reaching above the roadside buildings. I photographed it in black and white, drawn to that single diagonal against the open landscape. Weathered surfaces, low scrub and a wide area of rough pavement give the sculpture a setting as striking as its shape.
I remember stopping with the van just off the road and watching the light shift across the metal and ground. The long shaft carries patches of pale paint and darker wear, while the large upper pieces give it a sharply defined silhouette. Behind it, low buildings show graffiti and dark openings. Street lamps and cables make smaller lines across the horizon, but the arrow remains the strongest form. I kept plenty of sky above the buildings to give its unusual scale room within the photograph.
The clouds added a softer movement around the rigid sculpture. Darker areas gather high in the frame, with lighter streaks above the roadside, and a long shadow reaches across the ground from the arrow’s base. I liked the balance between the tilted form and the level horizon. For someone drawn to curious roadside structures, Americana or the American Southwest, the photograph offers a distinctive focal point with a restrained palette. For me, it holds a pause during my Arizona travels, when an unexpected sculpture and changing light gave an otherwise quiet roadside a compelling visual shape.
