A Painted Face Beneath a Worn Stars and Stripes Hat
A painted Uncle Sam face fills a distressed wall in this close colour photograph. His tall hat carries red and white stripes above a blue band of stars, while green paint borders the face below. Cracks, missing paint, and a rough surface remain visible throughout, making the wall’s condition part of the subject rather than a distraction from it.
I framed the mural closely enough that the eyes and hat hold the image together. The face is recognizable despite the broken surface, and the colours remain strong in some areas even where the drawing has faded. That uneven survival of detail is what makes the photograph interesting to me.
A dark vertical crack crosses the centre of the face, while other seams and worn patches interrupt the hat. The painted lines and the wall’s own marks overlap, creating an image that cannot be separated from its surface. Looking more closely shifts attention from the familiar figure to the layers of colour and texture around him.
I photographed the mural in 2011. The image presents Uncle Sam as found on this wall, with neither the wear nor the surrounding colour removed from the view. As an urban photography print, it combines a recognizable Americana subject with the irregular character of a painted facade. The appeal lies in that meeting of a strong graphic image and a surface that changes how it is seen.
