Split Wood and Stones Across a Dense Forest Floor
Fallen wood fills the frame: a broad split log crosses the foreground, and a dense weave of smaller branches extends behind it. Between them are leaves, stones and patches of low vegetation. In this black and white photograph, I have kept the view close to the ground, letting the forest floor become the entire subject rather than a background beneath standing trees.
The largest pieces of wood establish a few strong directions through the picture. Their weathered surfaces are deeply ridged, with broken ends and irregular edges. Smaller sticks cross those lines repeatedly, creating an intricate pattern that becomes clearer the longer I look. A few dark openings between the logs prevent the pale wood from merging into one continuous surface.
I enjoy the contrast between the heavy foreground trunk and the much finer branches beyond it. The image has no open horizon or broad patch of sky; everything happens within this close arrangement of natural material. Black and white makes the changes in texture especially visible, from the grain of split timber to the scattered leaves and rough stones.
For someone drawn to woodland details and complex natural patterns, this print offers plenty to explore. From across a room, the large diagonal forms give it structure. Up close, the overlapping branches and worn surfaces turn that structure into a much more detailed view of the ground I photographed.
