Temple of Appliques Ulaanbaatar Black and White Architectural Photography
Carved Roof Tiles Above a Weathered Temple Doorway
Standing before the Temple of Appliques in Ulaanbaatar, I was drawn to the amount of detail gathered across its facade. During my travels through Mongolia, I often noticed temple surfaces where faded paint, worn wood, and uneven finishes remained plainly visible. I photographed this entrance as I encountered it, choosing a square view that brought the central doorway, decorated beams, and roof tiles into one closely layered composition.
The stone path leads toward the door, while columns establish a clear frame on either side. Above them, bands of painted timber and carved brackets create repeated horizontal lines beneath the tiled roof. Lattice panels introduce finer patterns around the entrance. I liked the shrub on the left because its irregular leaves interrupt the building’s symmetry without hiding the doorway. The weathered finish gives the larger surfaces variation, so the facade stays interesting beyond its repeated ornament.
Black and white allowed me to follow the structure and texture without depending on the faded colours. The darker door anchors the centre, and the roof’s small repeated forms create a distinct upper edge. For me, the photograph balances a carefully ordered entrance with the less regular marks on its surfaces and the foliage beside it. As architectural wall art for a study, library, or entryway, it offers a detailed view from my Mongolia visit. The overall arrangement is clear across a room, while the carved motifs and latticework provide plenty to study at a closer distance.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
