A Weathered Offshore Tower Beside Remnants of a Narrow Platform
A weathered observation tower rises above the sea in this black and white Bahamas photograph. Its broad lower section, smaller upper platform and narrow mast create an unusual silhouette against open sky. I made the image in 2013, keeping the water in the foreground and the low shoreline behind it visible within a wide composition.
The tower sits well to one side of the frame. That placement gives the surrounding space an important role, with a long, narrow platform remnant extending across the water to its right. Farther along, a single damaged support stands apart. These smaller structures help the eye move across the scene while making the main tower’s proportions clearer.
I am drawn to the contrast between the tower’s built form and the softer surroundings. Its platforms have definite horizontal edges, and the mast provides a fine vertical line. The clouds above are much less regular, while small ripples fill the sea below. Monochrome connects those textures without letting the water’s colour become the dominant subject.
The worn surfaces keep the structure from reading as a clean architectural outline. Dark patches mark the pale tower, and the lower windows form a broken-looking band beneath the upper levels. Those visible details give the photograph its particular character. For someone drawn to abandoned coastal structures and unusual seascapes, this image offers a broad Bahamas view with a clear focal point, leaving room around the tower for the sky, sea and scattered remnants to be explored.
