Broken Ceiling Boards Above Worn Cabinets and Scattered Timber
The ceiling opens into a dense pattern of broken boards and exposed beams above this abandoned kitchen at Stony Dell Resort. Below, worn cabinets and loose timber fill the room, with a narrow chair standing near the back wall. I photographed the interior in 2022 while exploring the resort’s remains. The contrast between the room’s surviving outlines and the fragments gathered within them gave the scene a strong architectural character.
A long window runs along the left wall, bringing light across the damaged work surfaces beneath it. Through the glass, a rough stone wall and vegetation provide a glimpse of the exterior. I like the way that lighter band carries the eye toward the back, where a smaller window introduces another clear rectangle within the worn wall.
At the right, a wooden door remains within its frame, its pale lower boards contrasting with the darker opening above. Loose planks angle across the foreground, overlapping containers, cabinet sections and other remnants. Their diagonal lines add movement beneath the more regular ceiling beams.
Black and white makes the differences between grain, cracked surfaces and deeper shadows especially clear. The image offers many details to follow, yet the windows and doorway keep the room’s original shape readable. As a print, this photograph provides an intimate view of a deteriorating resort interior, suited to someone drawn to abandoned kitchens, weathered wood and the layered texture of buildings left to change over time.
