Weathered Concrete Block Garage With a Stepped Facade

The stepped roofline stopped me before anything else did. It gives this small abandoned garage in South Whitley, Indiana, an unexpected sense of formality—almost like a miniature commercial facade built for a much grander purpose.

I found the building in 2007. By then, vegetation had begun to take over the entrance, weeds were pushing up along the base, and the garage door and narrow side window carried the wear of years. What fascinated me was the tension between neglect and design. The concrete-block walls are plain and utilitarian, yet the tiered parapet above them creates a strong geometric silhouette that refuses to disappear quietly.

Black and white felt right for the scene. Without colour, the photograph becomes about shape, surface, and contrast: pale masonry against dark foliage, the irregular panels of the old door, the deep window opening, and even the loose wire dropping down the facade. Nothing is polished. That is exactly what gives the photograph its character.

I am drawn to places like this because they are easy to overlook. They are rarely landmarks and almost never destinations. They simply sit beside the road until age, weather, and vegetation slowly change them. This little Indiana garage had reached that point where the ordinary had become distinctive. I stopped because the architecture, decay, and quiet persistence of the building had begun to tell their own story.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
