Abandoned Currie Schoolhouse Photography in Black and White
A School Zone Sign Beside Weathered Wood and Old Vehicles
The School Zone sign is the detail I keep returning to in this photograph. It stands beside a small abandoned schoolhouse in Currie, Nevada, with old vehicles and equipment gathered beyond the fence. I photographed the scene in black and white because the worn timber and broad desert sky already carried so much character.
The building is plain and compact, with a steep roof, boarded opening and narrow doorway. I like its directness. There is no elaborate architecture to draw attention away from the weathered boards, and the sign gives the modest structure a clear connection to its former use without needing to imagine what happened inside.
In the foreground, rough horizontal fence rails lead across the view. Their broken edges and exposed grain echo the schoolhouse walls, while the trucks, trailers and round piece of equipment add a more crowded rhythm behind them. Above it all, bright scattered clouds spread across a dark-toned sky. I left that sky generous in the frame to balance the density of the yard.
I have photographed many forgotten places in the American West, but this one stayed with me for the contrast between its school sign and its present surroundings. As a print, it suits someone drawn to ghost towns, rural architecture or the less polished side of Americana. What matters to me is the place as I found it: a surviving building, an ordinary sign, and the many visible textures that time has left around them.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
