Weathered Cream Paint and Rust Across the Truck Cab
Permission at a farm gate led to a couple of hours among old vehicles. I had stopped in southern Alberta to photograph abandoned cars, trucks and machinery when a local came over to ask what I was doing. After I explained, he let me enter the field. This colour detail of a GMC 9500 was one of the photographs I made there in 2025.
I was drawn to the meeting of the hood, cab and fender. The GMC lettering and 9500 emblem remain visible, but patches of rust and failing cream paint reshape the bodywork around them. Rather than include the whole truck, I stayed with this close arrangement of curves, edges and dark glass.
Late sunlight catches the window trim and parts of the door, while the windshield is mostly in shadow. The steering wheel remains just visible inside. A broad fender fills the lower left, giving weight to the composition, and diagonal metal supports carry the eye across the brighter section of the cab.
Burnt orange, weathered cream and deep blue-grey shadows form a restrained palette. I like how the truck remains identifiable while its surfaces also become a study of texture and geometry. The details that interested me in the field are still the ones that hold the photograph together: the fading finish, the legible badge and the change from warm light to dark interior. It brings a close, tactile view of an old working vehicle to anyone drawn to automotive subjects with visible wear.
