Steel Wheels Half Hidden in Saskatchewan Field Grass
Grass reaches through the steel wheels of this abandoned tractor in southern Saskatchewan. In my black and white photograph, the machine sits low beneath a broad sweep of clouds, with its steering wheel and curved rear fenders still clear above the tangled field. The contrast between those hard shapes and the surrounding growth first caught my attention.
I hiked into the field with my camera, drawn to the equipment rather than an expansive view alone. From this position, the wheel nearest me becomes a dark circle broken by spokes and raised metal treads. Farther back, the perforated seat makes a smaller pattern of light and shadow. The tractor remains recognizable, even where grass obscures its lower frame.
Removing colour let me concentrate on surface and shape. Pale strands run across the weathered metal, sometimes tracing its edges and sometimes hiding them. Above the machine, the steering wheel cuts a simple outline against the lighter sky. I wanted that small, clear detail to remain part of a view that is otherwise crowded with texture.
The space above the field gives the photograph room to breathe. Layered clouds carry the eye away from the close grasses before bringing it back to the tractor. Forgotten machines interest me for the particular forms they leave in a landscape: here, curved steel and irregular growth fit together without becoming indistinguishable. I kept both in the composition, allowing the prairie setting to be as present as the old equipment.
