Weathered Barn With American Flag Black and White Rural Photography
Faded Vertical Boards Beneath a Long Ridged Roof
The farmer told me this barn had stood since the early 1800s. That conversation changed the way I looked at its weathered front when I photographed it in 2021. The American flag sits near the middle of the wall, a crisp rectangle of stars and stripes surrounded by worn boards, narrow vents and small windows.
I framed the building so the flag would remain a clear centre within the larger facade. The vertical timber gives the wall a steady rhythm, interrupted by pale patches where the surface has worn. I like how those irregular marks make each section slightly different. Two tall louvred openings echo one another on either side, adding a quieter balance around the flag.
Above, the long metal roof carries fine parallel ridges beneath a clouded sky. The overcast light gave the wall an even tone, helping the board texture and openings remain visible. A dark lower entrance on the left brings depth into the otherwise flat front.
I chose black and white to give the weathered surfaces and simple shapes a strong place in the photograph. For me, the farmer’s account remains part of its meaning, alongside the physical details captured in the frame. As a print, it offers a rural Americana subject with a clear focal point and plenty of texture, inviting a closer look at the barn that holds the flag.
