A Weathered Blue Band Against the White Winter
The faded blue boards give this barn a quiet colour accent within the snow. They run across the upper wall beneath a broad white roof, with darker weathered timber and two small windows below. I like how the building’s simple arrangement stays clear against the pale winter ground and sky.
The roof is the largest light shape in the picture. A small wooden dormer interrupts it near the centre, while lower roofs extend on either side. The blue wall has worn patches that reveal the texture of the boards, and the darker section beneath it carries warmer brown tones. A wooden door and pale siding near the base add further changes in material without making the facade feel crowded.
I photographed this rural Ontario barn in 2018. The snow softens the surrounding ground but leaves the building’s surfaces easy to study. I like the balance of colour and texture: a muted blue stripe, rough brown wood and the smooth-looking white roof. The little windows provide a pair of repeated shapes at a smaller scale than the broad roof and wall.
