Vintage Red Fire Bucket and Peeling Paint Colourful Wall Art
A Small Warning Against a Field of Colour
“Prevent Forest Fires!” is a small message in a photograph full of colour. A red bucket hangs beside it, worn down to pale metal in places, while the orange and pink surface behind it breaks into countless flakes. I photographed this detail on an antique fire truck at an outdoor transportation museum in Alaska in 2010.
What interests me here is the relationship between the useful object and the surface around it. The bucket has a curved wire handle and a rounded lower end, giving it a distinct shape against the flat panel. Its red paint remains strong even where it has been scraped away. Beside it, the black and white warning strip adds a clear, readable interruption to the warmer colours.
The background carries an almost abstract pattern. Large cracks near the top become smaller, denser fragments farther down, with dark rust-coloured bands crossing the panel. I like following those changes in scale. From across a room, the photograph reads as orange, red and pink; closer up, the metal, peeling layers and small lettering make it a study of an object that has weathered over time.
