Graffiti Wall Art on a Weathered Maine Rock Face
Painted Marks Across a Rugged Maine Rock Face
The first thing that held me here was the collision between something ancient-looking and something completely temporary. Across this Maine rock face, layers of white, turquoise, purple, and faded markings sit against stone streaked with rust orange, brown, grey, and ochre.
I was drawn to the way the graffiti does not simply sit on top of the rock. The fractures, ledges, stains, and mineral colour seem to break the painted marks apart, so the human gestures become part of the surface rather than a separate layer. Some words are still legible; others have faded into fragments. From a distance, the whole wall begins to work almost like an abstract composition.
That tension is what made the photograph interesting to me. Rock suggests permanence. Graffiti is usually fleeting. Here, the two occupy the same space, one weathering slowly while the other is already disappearing into it.
I photographed the scene in Maine in 2018, but what matters most to me is the texture and contradiction within the frame. The warm natural colour of the stone dominates, while the scattered graffiti interrupts it just enough to keep the eye moving. Cracks become lines, mineral stains become fields of colour, and the painted marks introduce a completely different kind of rhythm.
It is an image about surface, time, and the traces people leave behind—even on something that seems far more permanent than we are.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
