Weathered Rink Boards And A Gate Against Open Sky
The gate and weathered boards of this outdoor hockey rink became the subject of my photograph in rural Quebec. Seen from outside, the structure forms a series of clear rectangles, with tall mesh panels rising above the lower wooden barrier. I liked how its practical construction stood against the open sky and distant countryside.
The central gate has diagonal braces that bring a different rhythm into the upright posts and horizontal boards. Worn paint and uneven surfaces give those simple forms texture, while the mesh adds a much finer pattern above. A gap between the taller panels allows the background to remain visible rather than closing the scene completely.
There are no players in the frame, so attention stays with the place itself. A light fixture, a sloping cable and a tree beyond the right side provide small details around the stronger geometry. Bare ground runs along the front of the boards, giving the structure a simple base beneath the taller panels.
I photographed the rink in 2015 and chose black and white to emphasise the boards, braces and mesh. The quiet setting offers a closer look at the spaces where the game is played. For a hockey enthusiast, a cottage or a room with Canadian rural photography, it is an understated print with familiar sporting character and a strong architectural pattern.
