Broken Timber Above A Small Brick Storefront And Empty Windows

Broken wooden boards rise above the brick frontage of an abandoned rural American store. I photographed this building in 2007, looking straight toward its central door and two large window openings. Black and white makes the uneven upper structure especially clear against the dense trees behind it.

The storefront still has a simple, recognisable arrangement. One window is boarded, while the other is dark and open to a little visible debris. The narrow door sits between them, with worn lower sections and a darker frame. I am drawn to how much of the building’s basic form remains readable despite its condition.

Above the brickwork, the timber is more fragmented. Long horizontal boards are missing in places, leaving gaps that reveal the structure behind them. Their irregular edges contrast with the smaller, more measured brick pattern below. Grass grows near the base, and a utility pole stands beside the building, giving the scene an ordinary roadside setting.

I wanted to keep the whole frontage and a little of its surroundings together. The photograph shows enough to convey the building’s abandonment without filling in the unknown details of its working life. The trees, rough surfaces, and empty pavement give it a quiet atmosphere. For someone interested in old storefronts and rural American photography, the image offers a direct architectural view where brick, broken wood, and dark openings carry the character of the scene.
