Abandoned Roadside Motel and Cut Trunks Black and White Photography
Two Bare Trunks Before a Low Weathered Motel
Two cut tree trunks stand in front of this abandoned roadside motel, their rough vertical shapes rising above the open ground. I stopped the van to photograph the building and its surroundings, keeping the trunks, low facade and broad sky together. The result is a view in which the setting has as much presence as the motel itself.
The pale building stretches across the middle of the frame, with doors and small windows breaking up its horizontal line. Bushes partly obscure the walls and gather around the ends of the structure. In the foreground, uneven patches of grass and weathered pavement create a rough approach to the building. I like the way the two trunks interrupt that distance, giving the eye separate points to move between before reaching the motel.
Above the roof, the relatively clear sky opens up the composition. It contrasts with the busy ground and foliage, making the building’s modest scale more apparent. The black and white treatment brings the different surfaces into the same tonal range: pale walls, dark windows, rough bark and the irregular marks beneath them.
This photograph appeals to me for its combination of plain architecture and unusual foreground shapes. The motel’s low form gives it a steady horizontal structure, while the trunks and vegetation make the scene less orderly. For a wall, it offers a quiet view of an American roadside building, with weathered detail and open space held in balance.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
