Whalers Bay Rusted Oil Tanks Abstract Photograph

Warm Curved Metal Above A Cool Gravel Foreground

Rust coloured oil tanks fill the upper part of this photograph from Whalers Bay in Antarctica. I was drawn to their broad curves and the way the warm metal stands against the cool grey gravel below. Made in 2010, the image looks closely at industrial structures while letting their shapes become an almost abstract arrangement.

Two tanks occupy most of the view, with another surface visible in the narrow gap between them. Riveted seams divide the metal into long bands and smaller rectangles. Those measured lines contrast with the uneven stains running down the walls. I like how the regular construction remains easy to see beneath the softer, less predictable patterns of weathering.

The dark space between the tanks adds depth to an otherwise shallow composition. It draws the eye inward, while the curved surfaces on either side bring it back toward the light. Near the base, faded markings add another layer of texture without taking over the image. The gravel provides a broad, quiet foreground where the close detail of the metal can settle.

I chose to leave the sky and the wider landscape outside the frame. Here, the interest lies in colour, geometry, and surface rather than an expansive Antarctic view. The result can work as industrial photography or as a warm abstract accent: a grounded study of rust, repeated seams, and large curved forms, with enough space below them to keep the composition calm.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
