La Bodeguita Havana Blue Wall Graffiti Colour Photography
Handwritten Names Across Pale and Vivid Blue Paint
A band of vivid blue paint divides this wall at La Bodeguita in Havana, Cuba, but the writing continues across it. I photographed a vertical section where fine handwritten names and larger dark marks cover both the pale upper wall and the stronger blue below. That change in background colour gives the image a clear structure within an otherwise very busy surface.
The smaller writing rewards a closer look. Names, place names, dates and simple drawings appear in different sizes and directions. Some marks overlap others, while a few large loops cut across several lines of finer text. I like the way the wall moves between something readable and something almost abstract. From farther back, the dark strokes make patterns; closer in, individual pieces of handwriting become distinct again. Red, yellow, orange and blue marks add further changes within the mostly dark lettering.
I kept the frame filled by the wall so there would be no separate view of the building to pull attention away from its surface. The lower blue area has its own density of small writing, continuing the accumulation visible above it. What interests me is the variety of scale within that shared space: a small name beside a broad letter, a fine line crossing a heavier curve. The photograph preserves the wall as I encountered it, with its layers and colours present together rather than reduced to a single message.
