Old Lofoten Hotel Above Dark Water Coastal Photograph
Rust Colored Roofs Below Snow Streaked Norwegian Mountains
Rust-colored roofing catches the eye before the mountain does. In this drone photograph from Lofoten, Norway, the weathered Joh L. Ustad Sjøhus hotel stands above dark water, with snow tracing the rock faces across the inlet. I chose this angle to give the waterfront building a clear shape within the larger coastal view.
The nearest gable turns toward the camera, while the long side of the building extends left over the water. Its pale siding shows uneven wear, and the platform below exposes a network of supports. The roof adds a subdued warm tone to a scene otherwise held largely in cool greys and greens.
Across the water, the mountain is marked by branching lines of snow. Low cloud partly covers its upper edge, keeping the summit from becoming a clean silhouette. That softness contrasts with the hotel’s sharply defined roof and windows. I like how the two forms remain separate while sharing the same heavy atmosphere.
The shoreline curves around the right of the building, and fine ripples lead across the open water on the left. This viewpoint makes the hotel feel attached to a narrow margin between land and sea.
I return to the image for that placement as much as the decay. The building gives the landscape a human scale, while the mountains and water make its exposed position unmistakable.
