Weathered Waterfront Hotel Beneath Norwegian Mountains Photo Print
Pale Wooden Buildings Against a Dark Rocky Hillside
The hotel looks small against the rock behind it. From above the water, its pale walls and repeated windows form a compact group beneath a much larger hillside. I used a drone to photograph Joh L. Ustad Sjøhus in Norway in 2023, keeping the buildings, worn waterfront platform, and steep terrain together in one muted color view.
What caught my attention was the contrast in scale and condition. The main building retains a clear, orderly façade, while the lower structure beside it shows more wear in its siding and roof. Their straight edges meet the irregular shoreline through a platform supported above the water. Dark openings beneath it make the whole group feel closely tied to the coast. I wanted enough distance to show those relationships without losing the windows and weathered surfaces that give the hotel its character.
The hillside occupies much of the upper frame, with rough ledges and small remnants of snow along the ridge. Low cloud continues that heavier atmosphere above the lighter buildings. Below, the water carries fine ripples rather than a smooth reflection. The photograph appeals to me as a meeting of human structure and a setting that dwarfs it. Its subdued greens, greys, and pale timber tones can bring a rugged coastal presence to a room, with the old hotel remaining the point that draws the eye back.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
