Curving Rails Lead Toward the Weathered Front of the Trolley
The rails curve through the foreground toward a weathered streetcar in this black and white photograph from Havana, Cuba. Seen head-on, the trolley has a distinctive face: rounded upper corners, circular lights and a row of dark windows. I was drawn to those shapes and to the everyday street setting around them.
Grass grows beside and between the tracks, softening the route into the picture. The streetcar’s lower body shows wear, with small marks and changing tones across its panels. Above it, electrical equipment and overhead wires form a much finer pattern. The poles continue along the road, giving the scene another set of lines to follow into the distance.
I photographed this view in 2017. The monochrome treatment brings the vehicle’s surface and surrounding details into the same quiet palette. Palm fronds and trees gather on the left, while fences and buildings define the right side of the street. A small figure further back gives a sense of scale without taking attention away from the trolley.
For someone drawn to vintage transport, Cuban street scenes or old railway equipment, this print offers a close view with plenty of character. It can sit comfortably in a study, workspace or living room, where its strong central subject remains clear from a distance. For me, the interest lies in how the familiar symmetry of the streetcar meets the irregular tracks, plants and wires around it.
