Blue Lobster Traps Reflect Below a Weathered Market Building
The blue lobster traps are the brightest part of this Portland, Maine waterfront photograph, but the weathered building gives them their setting. Harbor Fish Market stands above the dock on timber pilings, with grey siding, mismatched windows and a faded sign. I like the practical character of this view: a working waterfront with plenty of detail to notice.
The market’s surface changes from one section to the next. Some windows are boarded, some hold dark glass, and the siding carries patches of red, pale grey and worn wood. The traps are stacked below it in an uneven arrangement, adding smaller rectangles to the larger ones in the facade. Above, a clear blue sky provides a simple opening around the dense dockside scene.
The water brings those details back in a less orderly form. Pilings, traps and parts of the building stretch into broken reflections, with blue and grey shifting across the surface. I am drawn to that change between the solid structure above and its moving counterpart below. It gives the photograph texture without every detail competing in the same way.
I photographed this scene in 2018. For someone who loves Maine, harbours or coastal buildings shaped by everyday use, this print offers a familiar kind of maritime character. It can bring subdued colour and a touch of dockside life to a study or living room. What stays with me is the building’s accumulated variety, with the blue traps making a clear point of focus.
