A Solitary Chair Between Rows of Shuttered Windows
One chair stands near the centre of an empty hospital ward on Ellis Island. Rows of tall windows recede on either side, with radiators beneath them and small patches of light crossing the floor. I photographed this abandoned interior in restrained colour, drawn to the balance between the room’s orderly shape and its worn surfaces.
The chair is modest in scale, yet it gives the space a clear point of attention. Around it, the floor stretches toward a single window at the far end. Cracks and discoloured areas interrupt the broad surface, while peeling walls and ceiling marks reveal the room’s condition. The window rows establish a repeating rhythm that makes those irregular details easier to notice.
I like how the light arrives in fragments. Bright openings within the darker windows produce short pools on the floor, leaving much of the room in soft shade. There is enough illumination to reveal the textures without making the ward feel bright or busy.
The photograph dates from 2019. I wanted to keep the sense of an interior that still has a strong physical presence, even after its former activity has gone. The empty chair suggests that absence without needing the room’s history to be explained in every detail.
