A Drawn Character Beside Weathered Plaster And Iron

A large cartoon character shares this Havana wall with a barred window and the handwritten equation “2+2=5”. I photographed the detail in 2017, bringing the playful drawing and the worn building surface into the same close view. The character’s rounded outline stands against a wall that is anything but smooth, with missing finish, rough patches and dark stains interrupting the image.

The figure occupies most of the left side. Its drooping eyes, small feet and curved arms are described with broad dark lines, while a question mark and a thought bubble appear above it. On the right, the window provides a much stricter pattern: straight metal bars crossing within a rectangular frame. I find the meeting of those two kinds of line particularly engaging. The drawing feels loose and expressive beside the window’s repeated squares, yet both become part of the wall’s overall texture.

Black and white allows the plaster, ironwork and drawn marks to carry equal weight. Pale areas surround the character, while darker surfaces above and beside it give the composition a stronger boundary. The equation near the bottom adds another small detail to discover after taking in the larger forms. My interest is in the visible encounter between street art and everyday architecture, rather than assigning a meaning to the artist’s symbols. As a print, this Cuban wall study brings humour, graphic contrast and weathered texture to a space with an interest in urban photography.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
