Abandoned Portland Doorways and Brick Interior Black and White Photography

One Empty Door Frame Leading Toward Another

An empty wooden door frame stands in a dark brick wall, opening onto a stripped interior and another smaller doorway beyond. Loose timber and debris lie along the floor, while pale light picks out the near frame’s worn edges. This black and white photograph was made in an abandoned building in Portland, Maine.

I was drawn to the repeated openings. The first frame is close and substantial, with layered moulding still visible around its sides. The second sits farther back, making the distance between them easy to feel. Looking through one toward the other gives the photograph a clear route, even though the rooms themselves are no longer intact.

The brickwork adds another kind of repetition. Rows of mortar lines continue around the opening and across the far wall, supplying smaller patterns inside the larger rectangles. Light falls unevenly across these surfaces, revealing some areas clearly and leaving others subdued. I like how that change in brightness makes the empty interior feel layered rather than simply dark.

Photographed in 2009, the scene offers a close view of architectural wear without needing to invent the building’s former story. The remaining frame, scattered materials and open passage are enough to suggest how much has changed. For someone drawn to abandoned places or textured monochrome photography, this image invites a longer look through the structure itself—past the nearest doorway, across the damaged floor and into the opening beyond.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
