A Tall Wooden Farmhouse Alone Beneath the Prairie Sky
One tall wooden farmhouse stands in open grassland in this black and white Saskatchewan photograph. Its steep roof and pale siding rise well above the low prairie horizon, leaving broad space around the building. I made the image in 2025, drawn to the clear shape of the house against the land and sky.
The side wall shows long bands of weathered boards, interrupted by narrow windows at different heights. On the gabled end, the dark openings and lighter trim create a more compact pattern. A small break in the roof adds an irregular mark among the shingles. Grass fills the foreground in loose patches of light and shadow, while a low bank of clouds stretches behind the house. Higher up, the sky is quieter, giving the roofline room to stand apart.
I kept the building off centre so the surrounding prairie would remain an active part of the photograph. The open area beside it makes the house feel small in relation to the land, even though it is the strongest form in the frame. Monochrome connects the wood and grass through their changing tones without losing the difference in texture between them. What interests me here is the simplicity of the overall view and the detail held within it. From a distance, the photograph is a house under a large sky; closer looking reveals the varied siding, window openings, and worn roof that give this particular structure its character.
