Ring of Kerry Abandoned Stone House Black and White Photography
Dark Openings Beneath Foliage And A Partial Metal Roof
Driving around Ireland’s Ring of Kerry, I came across this abandoned stone house among the views along the route. I photographed it in 2019. The uneven walls and roofless section caught my attention, but the intact metal roof at one end made the building especially intriguing. It left me wondering why one part remained covered while the rest had been left open.
The long facade runs across the photograph, with a doorway and small window openings set into rough stonework. Each section of wall has its own mixture of stones, pale patches and darker crevices. I like the way those irregular surfaces contrast with the simple rectangular openings. The spaces beyond them are dark, keeping the building’s interior largely hidden.
Vegetation grows above and around the uncovered section, almost forming a replacement canopy. Branches and leaves extend across the upper part of the frame, while grasses and ferns crowd the ground in front. On the right, the corrugated roof creates a much more regular series of parallel lines. That difference between foliage and metal is one of the photograph’s strongest details.
Black and white brings out the wall texture without separating it too sharply from the surrounding growth. The horizontal framing allows the different parts of the house to be seen together, making its uneven condition part of the composition. Photographing abandoned buildings often leaves me with questions like the one this roof raised. Here, those questions sit within a tangible view of stone, openings and plants on an Irish roadside.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
