Pale Curved Wood Among Green Reeds And Red Plants

A weathered stump rises from the shallow water in this Algonquin Park scene. Its pale wood curves outward around a broken upright centre, with green reeds and reddish plants growing close beside it. I came across the stump in 2014 and was drawn to the way its reflection extended the shape into the water below.

The wood has a flowing grain that remains clear despite its broken edges. Long curved pieces spread toward both sides of the frame, while a straighter branch leans diagonally behind the stump. The upright section has a jagged top and a darker interior, giving the central form a different weight from the thinner pieces around it. I find that mixture of solid and delicate shapes particularly interesting.

Small ripples soften the reflected wood without dissolving it. The downward shape becomes longer and less regular, with narrow reeds producing fine wavering lines nearby. A few leaves rest on the water’s surface, interrupting the reflection with small patches of colour. The brighter open water in the foreground lets those details remain easy to distinguish.

Behind the stump, green plants and fallen branches make a denser pattern along the swamp edge. Red tones appear in several places, adding warmth to the grey wood and cool water. This photograph holds on a small piece of Ontario’s wetland landscape rather than a broad scenic view. Its combination of weathered texture, new growth and gentle reflections makes an absorbing nature print for anyone who enjoys the quieter details found beside the water.
