Whalers Bay Abandoned Tractor Tires Black and White Photography
Two Buried Curves Across The Barren Antarctic Ground
Two large tire arcs were enough to interrupt the open ground at Whalers Bay in Antarctica. I came across them while exploring the abandoned whaling station during my Antarctica tour. Their exposed tread and nearby mechanical fragments became the subject of this black and white photograph.
The larger tire sits closest to the camera, with the second repeating its curve farther back. Both are partly buried, so the forms emerge from the gravel rather than standing as complete wheels. Smaller cables and metal pieces extend toward the right, adding another scale of detail beside the heavy shapes.
I wanted the surrounding emptiness to remain visible. It gives the tires space and makes their repeated arcs more pronounced. The tread, scattered stones and darker openings beneath the wheels create texture within a fairly simple arrangement. Black and white keeps those surfaces together without distracting colour.
Walking through the station was one of the experiences I remember most clearly from the trip. The remnants made me think about the people who had worked there and the different world the place once belonged to. In this frame, that reflection stays grounded in what remains physically visible. The tires carry the photograph from a distance, while closer viewing reveals the smaller worn pieces around them. For me, their form and exposed setting give this industrial remnant an almost sculptural presence.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
