Broken Roof Boards Above Tall Grass and Weathered Walls
Tall grass fills the foreground, almost reaching the lower boards of the barn. I photographed this abandoned Ontario building from close beside its long wall, where missing timber and a damaged roof make its condition immediately visible. In black and white, the grass, weathered wood, and heavy clouds become three distinct textures.
The roofline runs diagonally through the upper part of the picture. Its broken edges keep that line from feeling too neat. Along the wall, gaps reveal the darker framework inside, while the surviving vertical boards catch enough light to show their uneven surfaces. The building remains substantial, even as sections of its covering have fallen away.
I kept a large area of grass in the frame because it changes the way the barn is seen. The fine stems and seed heads make a dense lower layer, contrasting with the larger boards above. Beyond the far end of the structure, a small strip of trees provides distance. The clouded sky gives the roof a clear background without turning the view into a broad landscape.
What holds my attention here is the relationship between the building’s strong outline and its many interruptions. The barn is recognisable at once, but a closer look finds open spaces, worn edges, and irregular lines throughout it. This rural photograph preserves that particular view from 2006, with the surrounding growth as much a part of the image as the abandoned structure.
