Direct Eye Contact And A Quiet Smile In Havana

I photographed this elderly woman in Havana, Cuba, creating a black-and-white portrait built almost entirely around her face, expression, and posture. She stands directly toward my camera with her arms folded across her body, looking straight into the lens with a small, unmistakable smile. Nothing about the expression feels exaggerated. It is restrained, warm, and wonderfully human.

Her face is where the photograph begins. Fine lines around her eyes and across her forehead remain clearly visible, while the folds of the fabric wrapped around her head create a strong frame around her features. I am especially drawn to the way her eyes hold the viewer. That directness is one of the things I look for in street portrait photography because a portrait becomes much more than a record of appearance when the person looking back carries a presence of their own.

The crossed arms give the photograph another layer. Her hands, fingers, forearms, and the texture of her skin are rendered with the same clarity as her face. The worn layers of clothing add still more texture: a dark shirt beneath a lighter outer garment, creases in the fabric, small marks, seams, and irregular surfaces that feel completely natural rather than arranged for the camera.

Behind her, the Havana setting falls deeply out of focus. Dark architectural shapes and a few isolated highlights remain visible, but they never compete with her. That separation was important to the portrait. Her lighter face, clothing, and arms emerge cleanly from the darker background, giving the image considerable visual strength without removing her from the environment where I found her.

I chose black and white because color was not the important information here. The photograph is about expression, wrinkles, fabric, hands, posture, and the quiet exchange created by direct eye contact. Removing color concentrates attention on those things and gives the portrait a tonal simplicity that suits the subject.

I offer this photograph as a limited edition of only 10 prints. Each print is personally signed by me and includes a certificate of authenticity. I print using archival pigment inks on premium archival paper, preserving the subtle grays, deep blacks, facial detail, and fine textures that are central to the photograph.

As wall art, I see this portrait working particularly well in interiors where strong figurative photography and neutral tones are allowed to carry the room. It may also appeal to collectors drawn to Cuba, human expression, documentary portraiture, and photographs that reveal character without spectacle.

For me, this portrait belongs naturally among my black and white street photography.
