Repeating Windows Lead Into A Long Empty Hallway

Rows of tall windows pull the eye down an empty corridor at Ellis Island Hospital. I photographed this interior in 2019, using its strong perspective to bring the worn walls, window grids, and quiet floor into a single view. The colour is subdued, with a patch of green outside offering a small contrast to the grey interior.

What I remember most about these hallways is their silence. In the photograph, that impression comes through the lack of people and the long stretch of uninterrupted floor. The corridor narrows toward a dark point in the distance, but the windows keep bringing light into the nearer space. I like the balance between that invitation to look farther and the detail close to the camera.

Each side has its own character. On the left, light passes through broad panes, revealing grass and parts of the surrounding buildings. On the right, weathered frames, boards, and cloudy glass make a denser pattern. The ceiling lines and central pipe reinforce the depth, while chipped surfaces interrupt the otherwise orderly repetition.

I wanted the image to hold both the hospital’s architectural rhythm and its present condition. There is enough texture to reward a close look, yet the overall composition stays simple and direct. For someone interested in abandoned interiors or the visual history of New York, this photograph offers an atmospheric view with a clear sense of space, light, and the passage from one doorway to the next.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
