Whalers Bay Weathered Green Cabin Antarctica Photograph
Faded Paint And An Open Door Against Snow
A little colour survives on this abandoned cabin at Whalers Bay: faded green boards, orange lettering, and traces of paint around an open doorway. I photographed it in Antarctica in 2011, setting the worn building against snow, dark gravel, and the pale mountain slopes behind it. The contrast makes its remaining colour feel especially vivid.
The cabin’s front is a patchwork of narrow boards and damaged openings. A short set of steps leads toward the black interior, while loose timber spills across the ground below. Along one side, the grey horizontal siding is still fairly orderly. On the other, a large section of wall has fallen away at an angle. I like the tension between those straight lines and the building’s uneven condition.
There is more to the scene than the facade alone. Rocks and scattered planks occupy the foreground, and the buildings farther back give a sense of the wider site. Above them, snow traces the mountain ridges beneath a nearly white sky. That open background allows the cabin to hold the viewer’s attention without isolating it from the place where it stands.
I kept the colour treatment restrained so the faded paint would sit naturally within the muted landscape. For me, the photograph is about looking closely at what remains visible rather than filling in the missing lives and events. It brings weathered architecture and an Antarctic setting together in a piece for anyone drawn to remote places and the texture of abandoned buildings.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
