Graffiti Covered Buildings Across an Open Desert Lot

A small abandoned motel stands in the open Nevada desert, its remaining buildings marked by large graffiti. I photographed this rural scene in 2022. In black and white, the low structures, empty ground and scattered clouds form a spare composition with the buildings set well below the middle of the frame.

I came across the motel while traveling through rural Nevada. What interested me was how little surrounded it. A roofless section occupies the left side, while a larger building remains on the right. Between them are posts and fragments of the former site, with distant hills running along the horizon. The open space makes each surviving piece more noticeable.

I included the broad gravel foreground rather than moving in close to the walls. A discarded tire and small debris interrupt that space, but nothing fills it. Above the buildings, a band of white clouds stretches across a much larger expanse of sky. Those proportions give the photograph its sense of distance.

The painted lettering is still bold against the pale walls, even where the structure itself is damaged. I wanted the image to hold both of those qualities: a readable, graphic surface and a place visibly falling apart. For a room with simple furnishings, this desert photograph brings architectural lines and rough textures into a largely open view.
