Abandoned Amboy Church Photography Along Route 66
A Small Desert Church Beneath an Open California Sky
Along Route 66 in Amboy, California, this small abandoned church caught my attention for the space around it. I photographed it in black and white, with its pale walls and simple cross set low beneath a broad desert sky. The empty foreground and distant mountain ridges make the building seem especially modest.
I like the plainness of the structure. There is very little ornament to distract from the roofline, narrow tower and cross. Beside it, a low adjoining building extends across the frame, giving the scene a horizontal weight. Utility poles and wires remain part of the view, reminders that this is a place shaped by everyday use rather than an isolated architectural study.
The monochrome treatment brings those relationships forward. Bright walls sit against darker mountain edges, while gravel and sparse shrubs give the foreground a rough texture. I left a generous amount of sky because it changes how the church feels: the architecture is a small presence within a much larger landscape.
For me, this is a Route 66 photograph about what remains visible when activity has fallen away. I do not need to invent the lives once connected to the building; its closed doors and quiet surroundings already invite reflection. As a print, it offers a restrained view of roadside Americana, with the church’s simple outline providing a steady focal point amid the open desert.
