Towering Concrete Church Rising Against Empty Nordic Sky

I stood at the base of Hallgrimskirkja in Reykjavik and felt what I always look for in architecture—scale that humbles you, lines that pull your eye upward, and a structure that feels rooted in something deeper than just design. This isn’t just a church. It rises like a geological formation, almost as if it grew out of Iceland itself, echoing basalt columns and volcanic forms in a way that feels both deliberate and natural.

From this angle, everything becomes about symmetry and ascent. The vertical ribs guide the eye in a steady rhythm, narrowing as they climb toward the tower. The clock sits quietly in the middle, almost like a pause before the final push upward into that patterned crown. And above it all, the cross—small in proportion, but absolute in presence. There’s a tension here between weight and lift. The base feels grounded, heavy, immovable. The top feels like it’s reaching for something beyond the frame.

Photographing this in black and white was never a question for me. Colour would have distracted from what makes this building powerful—the contrast, the geometry, the raw texture of the concrete against the sky. In monochrome, the structure becomes cleaner, more deliberate. Light and shadow define everything. The right side falls into darkness, the left catches just enough light to reveal detail, and that imbalance gives the image its depth.

I photographed this on location during my time in Iceland, working through the city with the kind of patience that only comes from being there, standing in front of the subject, waiting for the moment when the scene simplifies itself. No shortcuts. No composites. Just the structure, the light, and the time spent understanding it.
