Receding Steel Trusses Over A River Crossing

There’s something about standing in the middle of an old railway bridge that immediately changes how you read distance. What looks short from the roadside suddenly stretches into something almost infinite once you’re inside the structure. The repeating steel frames become less about engineering and more about rhythm. One after another, they tighten the perspective until everything collapses into a single point far out across the river.

This particular crossing in Quebec had just been hit with rain, and the wooden ties beneath my feet were still wet when I stepped out onto the span. The steel beams carried that dull, reflective sheen that comes only from weathered metal in real conditions, not factory finishes or studio light. The rails pulled the eye forward while the trusses above began to compress into overlapping geometry with every step I took inward.

From this position, everything becomes symmetrical. The outer diagonal supports form a kind of tunnel, narrowing the world until the land on either side becomes secondary. Even the distant shoreline fades into a soft horizon, letting the structural pattern dominate the frame. It’s less about the river or the environment at that point, and more about movement through space — a visual corridor built for transportation that now reads almost like an abstract study in repetition and depth.

I photographed this on location while travelling through rural Quebec, standing directly on the active line to align the rails and upper trusses into a single vanishing point. What you’re seeing existed exactly as it appeared in that moment — the mist in the distance, the tonal shift in the sky, and the darkened timber below were all part of the scene as it unfolded in real time.
