Stone Walls Above the Still Adriatic Sea
Lovrijenac Fortress occupies the upper edge of this photograph, but the cliff beneath it holds much of the drama. Rough rock rises above smooth Adriatic water, with smaller outcrops standing apart in the foreground. I photographed this Dubrovnik coast at dusk, using black and white to bring the stone, sea and fading sky into a restrained composition.
The fortress walls look almost geometric above the irregular cliff. Their straight edges and small openings contrast with fissures, ledges and patches of vegetation below. A separate rock on the left balances the heavier mass on the right, while a low foreground outcrop draws the eye back across the water. The view allows the architecture and its setting to be read together.
Long exposure softens the movement of the sea. Around those sharply textured rocks, the water becomes a quiet field of grey, broken by darker reflections and the sheltered gap beneath the cliff. I like the sense of stillness that develops there. The fortress remains recognisable, yet the photograph also works through the simple relationship of solid forms and open space.
For a collector drawn to Croatia, coastal architecture or moody seascapes, this image brings those interests together without needing a busy city view. It can give a living room or study a calm focal point, with the stone’s detail becoming more apparent as you look closer. Made in 2020, it preserves the quiet transition between daylight and night along Dubrovnik’s shore.
