Pale Birch Trunks Rise Above Long Snow Shadows
Long shadows cross the snow beneath a stand of white birch near Haliburton, Ontario. In this black and white forest photograph, pale trunks rise into a dark winter sky, with fine bare branches gathering toward the top. A small evergreen near the foreground adds a different shape among the repeating vertical lines.
Winter walks in this area often make me aware of how quiet the woods can become after snowfall. On this crisp, windless day, I spent time studying the light as it moved between the trees. The sun brought out the white bark while leaving enough shadow to separate the trunks and show their texture.
That balance matters throughout the image. Bright snow opens the lower part of the frame, while narrow dark lines stretch across it. Farther into the woods, the trees become more closely spaced. I like how those overlapping trunks create distance without needing a path or a clearing to lead the eye.
The birches are similar, but they are not identical. Some lean slightly, some split above the ground, and others carry larger dark markings in the bark. Those small differences keep the repetition from becoming rigid.
For me, the photograph brings together the clarity and complexity of an Ontario winter forest. Its strong contrasts are easy to see from a distance, while the branching patterns and layered trunks offer a quieter reason to keep looking.
