Straight Tree Trunks Rise From a Quiet Snowfield
Tall, straight trees rise from a snow-covered forest floor in this black and white photograph from Haliburton, Ontario. Small evergreens and slender saplings break the open white ground, while the larger trunks repeat deep into the woods. I photographed the scene in 2018, drawn to the calm structure that snowfall had brought forward.
I have spent many hours exploring these Haliburton stands, and their repeated vertical lines often make me stop. On this occasion, the overcast light softened the spaces between the trees. I remember standing still for a moment before making the photograph, letting the arrangement settle rather than rushing toward a more obvious focal point.
The forest is orderly at first glance, but its details are far from uniform. Some trunks are broad and textured; others become thin grey lines in the distance. Young evergreens spread low branches near the foreground, and small bare stems interrupt the snow. Those variations keep the image from becoming a simple grid.
The white ground gives the eye a quieter area below the dense canopy. From there, it can move upward and deeper between the trunks, finding one layer after another. What I wanted to preserve was that balance of simplicity and detail: a familiar Canadian forest made visually spare by snow, yet still full of individual shapes. It is a winter print with a gentle, sustained rhythm.
