Tall Evergreen Trees Below Steep Slopes and Snowy Peaks
Tall evergreen trees fill the foreground of this Rocky Mountain valley photograph. Beyond them, the land falls away between steep slopes before rising to a range of snow marked peaks. I made the image in 2011, and I like the depth created by those successive layers: close trees, a forested valley and much larger mountain forms in the distance.
The vertical composition gives the trees a substantial role in the view. Their pointed tops and fine branches form a detailed lower area, contrasting with the broad rock faces above. My eye follows the valley into the centre of the photograph, then moves up through the exposed slopes toward the snow along the skyline.
Black and white brings out the differences in light and texture. Darker forest patches sit beside pale rock and snow, while long channels on the mountain faces create strong downward lines. The slopes hold several tones rather than a single flat surface, making the scale of the terrain easier to read. A small area of clear sky gives the peaks a clean edge.
I see this photograph appealing to someone who enjoys mountain scenery with both structure and detail. On a wall, it offers the feeling of looking deep into a valley, with the close trees helping to establish distance. The image holds together through its large forms, yet the branches, forest pattern and mountain surfaces invite further attention. For me, the lasting appeal lies in that movement from the near evergreens into the snowy range beyond.
