Bare Trees Stand Across a Bright Snowy Clearing
A bright clearing opens in front of the forest in this Haliburton, Ontario winter photograph. I worked in black and white, letting the snow create a broad foreground beneath a line of evergreens and bare trees. A few taller trunks stand apart from the denser woodland behind them.
I like how the open ground changes the way the trees look. With snow around their bases, the individual trunks become easy to follow, while the forest further back forms a much finer pattern. Small stems and fallen branches break the white surface without filling it.
The low branch in the foreground is a detail I keep returning to. Its curve and shadow give the empty snow a point of interest, and then the eye moves toward the upright trees beyond. Above the forest, small clouds add another soft texture. I kept enough of that sky to let the tree line breathe, but the clearing remains the main source of light in the photograph.
This Haliburton winter print brings a spacious woodland view into a room. Its wide composition and restrained tones work well where you want a natural scene that is quiet from a distance and detailed up close. For me, the photograph is held together by the contrast between the open snow and the dense forest: two very different surfaces, joined by those few solitary trunks.
