Black and White Humpback Whale Tail Fine Art Print

I shot this just after dawn from the deck of a small sailboat navigating the glassy waters of British Columbia’s Inside Passage. One of those rare, wordless moments: the sea so still it was like polished obsidian, the air thick with coastal mist. And then—this humpback. Rising, arcing, vanishing. The fluke hung there midair, dripping with the weight of the ocean, before disappearing into the deep like it had never been.

This is one of those frames that takes nothing for granted. I didn’t chase it or bait it or composite it. I waited, watched, and hoped. Nature gave me something quiet and unforgettable. There’s no grand colour or sweeping drama—just texture, shape, and that soft, heavy stillness that only a real encounter can hold. The black and white treatment strips it down to what I saw and felt in that instant: solitude, reverence, scale.

The Spirit Bear Photography Tour isn’t just about the elusive bear—it’s a portal into one of the last truly wild corners of the world. Whales, wolves, bald eagles… and mornings like this, where a single gesture from nature breaks the silence and says, “You’re not alone.” This whale, with its curved tail rimmed in light and salt, became a symbol of that connection for me.

I’ve always leaned into minimalism when it comes to wall art, especially for wildlife. There’s a fine line between spectacle and stillness—and in this case, I chose stillness.

Like all my prints, this one’s available in a range of sizes—hand-signed and printed using archival materials to make sure what you’re seeing lasts. It’s honest work, made on location, not in software.

If you’re drawn to raw, untouched moments like this, take a deeper look at what I captured on that expedition in the Wildlife Photography Collection or explore the wild coastal beauty of the British Columbia Photography Collection.

Museum Quality Fine Art Prints

All prints are produced by the artist using archival pigment inks on professional photographic paper with a subtle luster finish.

This paper offers a balanced surface that enhances tonal depth, preserves fine detail, and reduces glare under typical indoor lighting conditions.

Each print is carefully inspected prior to dispatch to ensure consistency of finish and presentation.

Each print is personally produced, signed, and packaged by me at my studio in Haliburton, Ontario, Canada.

During periods of travel for on-location photographic work, dispatch may be delayed until I return to the studio.
