Ontario Pond Lily Pads and Fallen Log Colour Photography
Round Green Leaves Around a Weathered Diagonal Trunk
A pale fallen log cuts diagonally across this Ontario pond, surrounded by a dense pattern of lily pads. I photographed the scene closely, with the water and plants filling the view. The log gives the image one strong direction, while the small rounded leaves gather around it in much less orderly groups. That contrast between a single long form and many smaller ones is what keeps my attention here.
The wood has lost much of its bark, revealing fine lengthwise lines and an uneven, weathered surface. Darker areas and a few reddish patches interrupt the pale grain. Beside it, the lily pads range from bright green to quieter olive tones, with occasional warmer coloured leaves among them. I like the small gaps where the dark water shows through. They separate the overlapping shapes and keep the pattern from becoming a flat sheet of green. Near the upper right edge, upright pond plants add another set of fine lines above the floating leaves.
I wanted this to remain a close view of the pond rather than a broader landscape. There is no distant shore or sky to give the eye another destination. Instead, the photograph asks me to follow the wood grain, the curved edges of the leaves and the dark spaces between them. The colour is part of that experience: subdued natural greens around a much lighter trunk, all held within the same small stretch of water.
